Rebels Secure Rising Star Emmanuel Kanwei
The Essex Rebels are thrilled to announce their first new signing for the upcoming 2024/25 NBL season, securing the talents of Nigerian-British center Emmanuel Kanwei.
Standing at an impressive 6-foot-8, Kanwei joins the Rebels after a standout season with Team Newcastle University in NBL Division 1, as well as showcasing his talents with Northumbria University in BUCS competition
The 21-year-old centre made significant strides in his development last season, featuring in 24 games, and accumulating 702 minutes of playtime. Kanwei’s impact on the court was evident, posting impressive statistics of 305 points in total with an efficient 50.4% shooting percentage from two-point range. His versatility shone through with averages of 7.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 2.2 turnovers per game.
Kanwei’s potential has not gone unnoticed, having briefly been part of the Newcastle Eagles BBL roster as part of their emerging talent pathway. His journey also includes valuable experience gained at Barking Abbey at the college level.
The centre’s rapid improvement was recognised when he was named the BUCS North 23/24 Most Improved Player of the Year while representing Northumbria University. His former coach, Drew Lasker, praised Kanwei’s development, stating:
“Emmanuel is a foundation piece we brought in last season as a first year. He’s gone from a timid player to a dominant force who now commands double teams! He was the most consistent player this offseason and the work has paid off!”
On joining Essex Rebels, Emmanuel Kanwei said:
“I am beyond excited to join the Essex Rebels and can’t wait to get started this 2024-2025 season. The opportunity to play alongside such a talented group and be part of an organization that shares my drive for success is what excites me the most. I’m looking forward to pushing myself and my teammates to new heights this season. To the fans, your energy fuels us, and I’m determined to give you everything I’ve got, night in and night out. Let’s make this season one to remember!”
Essex Rebels Head Coach Ross Norfolk expressed his excitement about the new signing:
“We are excited to have Emmanuel as part of the roster. He comes with great experience of the D1 level, having played with Barking at academy level and then progressing onto Newcastle with his University studies. Emmanuel’s presence on the offensive end is evident with his footwork, touch, and shooting capabilities. He is able to play inside and outside and be our anchor on the defensive end. His versatility complements our style of play perfectly – he can play on the block, off the rip on the perimeter, and shoot the 3. We can’t wait to utilise his skill set and maximize his potential this season.”
Essex Rebels fans can look forward to seeing Kanwei’s dominant presence in the paint and his continued growth as a player in a Rebels jersey soon.
Don’t miss the chance to see Emmanuel Kanwei and the rest of the Essex Rebels in action. Season tickets are available now, and general admission tickets for home games will be on sale soon.
Stay tuned for more exciting announcements as we approach the new season!
