In a thrilling semifinal matchup, Essex Rebels II edged out Loughborough Riders II with a narrow 77-71 victory, earning their place in the final in Manchester on Saturday 27th April.
The Rebels slow start in the first half, saw Loughborough leading 23-18 after the first quarter and extending their lead to 41-36 by halftime. The Riders’ effective shooting and defence seemed to put the Rebels on the back foot.
However, the third quarter was the turning point for the Rebels. Led by an outstanding 42-point performance from Jordan Ashley, the Rebels outscored Loughborough 27-15, turning a five-point deficit into a 63-56 lead heading into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, Loughborough Riders II attempted to mount a comeback, but the Rebels’ defence held firm. Despite Loughborough’s efforts to regain control, the Rebels maintained their composure, effectively managing the clock and converting key free throws.
Coach Maiden said:
Our semi-final vs Loughborough was a real test, Jordan Ashley’s individual performance was the standout, but it took everyone’s efforts to get us the win. The final on Saturday will be a huge test, Barnet Bulldogs have only been beaten once this year and it will take another monumental effort from us to win this playoff title!
Following Saturday’s win, the Rebels have advanced to the NBL Division 3 final, where they will face the Barnet Bulldogs on Saturday, 27th April, in Manchester at 1pm. It’s set to be an exciting showdown as both teams compete for the championship title. The Rebels will be hoping to carry their momentum into the final and complete their unbeaten season!
