Essex Rebels Fall Short against Leicester in the Playoff Quarterfinals
In the Quarterfinals of the Women’s British Basketball League Playoffs, the Essex Rebels faced off against the Leicester Riders. This marked the fourth meeting between these two teams this season, and also echoed last season’s Quarterfinal clash between the two sides. Despite a valiant effort, the Essex Rebels came up just short of reaching the Semifinals, enduring a heart-breaking 81-79 loss.
First Half
The Essex Rebels came out strong with lots of energy, taking control of the game in the first quarter and building a big 19-point lead. Ashley Cookson led the Rebels’ offense smoothly, while Dayzsha Rogan led a strong defensive effort, stopping Leicester from scoring easily. Even though they faced difficulties, the Riders fought back in the second quarter, reducing the lead to 11 points by halftime. Taylor O’Brien and Katie Januszewska played key roles in Leicester’s comeback with their impressive performances.
Second Half
The third quarter unfolded as a back-and-forth battle, with momentum swinging back and forth between the two teams. Essex managed to stretch their lead to 20 points at one point, but the Riders staged a strong comeback, narrowing the margin to seven. As the game headed into the final quarter, the Rebels held onto an 11-point lead, but they faced challenges due to foul trouble. Sensing an opportunity, the Riders stepped up their efforts, inspired by O’Brien’s standout performance. Shahd Abboud emerged as a key player off the bench, scoring important points in the decisive fourth quarter. With captain McKenzie Johnston leading the way, the Riders orchestrated an impressive comeback, clinching victory in the closing moments of the game.
Head Coach Cookson commented on the game:
I’m very proud of the resilience we have shown this season and it has been an absolute pleasure to coach this great group of young women. Of course this was a disappointing end to our season, but one that will fuel the work over the post season. We are only scratching the surface of what is possible here at Essex and I’m excited about the possibilities moving into the 24-25 season! Up the Rebs to be continued…
