Rebels fall short against Derby in Top-of-the-Table Clash
In an electrifying showdown between the Essex Rebels and the Derby Trailblazers in a highly anticipated top-of-the-table clash in the NBL Division 1, Derby emerged victorious, overtaking the Rebels to claim the coveted top spot.
The game started with an intense and high-energy first quarter, as both teams exhibited their prowess on the court, engaging in a relentless back-and-forth exchange of points, with neither team able to gain an advantage. As the game progressed into the second quarter, both teams continued to showcase their offensive capabilities, particularly from the perimeter. However, with just four minutes remaining in the half, the Trailblazers intensified their defensive efforts, applying relentless pressure on the Rebels and disrupting their rhythm.
This shift in momentum proved to be pivotal, as Derby’s tightened defense not only curtailed the Rebels’ scoring opportunities but also enabled them to capitalize on some easy break out scores. The Rebels found themselves down by 12 at half time.
The start of the second half saw Derby continue with the momentum created late in the last quarter and the rebels were unable to create easy scoring chances to cut the deficit. Derby started to showcase their scoring abilities with the team pitching in from the outside and as well as the foul line. The Rebels continued to try and claw back the points differential but the damage was done in the earlier quarters. The game finished 102 – 80 to the trailblazers.
Essex had multiple players in double digit scoring, including Victor Olarerin, Connor Nelson, Kyron Martin and Zain Poorman all pitched in 12 points.
The Rebels now look to bounce back and continue to put pressure on at the top, they take on Barking Abbey next week away from home.
The Rebels next home game will be a Lunar New Year Special on the 10th February at 6.30pm.
