Rebels with a cause – Rebels players spread Christmas cheer
Children in care were given a Christmas they won’t forget thanks to the kind-hearted Essex Rebels and their fans.
Toys, presents and basketballs were donated to the youngsters at a very special party organised by the team at Colchester City Council.
The elite athletes from the women’s side came down to celebrate the festive season and enjoy a Christmas dinner with the youngsters.
Unfolding this week, the event came after the side’s annual Christmas-themed game which saw fans donate toys.
And the Rebels made sure there was enough cheer to go around by also gifting balls and clothes to the children.
A spokeswoman for the team said: “It was amazing to be able to be part of the Children in Care Christmas party.
“All carers and social workers put a lot of effort behind this, and it was great to see that the kids enjoying themselves.”
The event was praised by the carers who thanked everyone for their generosity.
Jacqui Mortlock, Team Manager Children & Families, Children in Care, said: “It was clear to see by the joy on the children’s faces that they enjoyed the company of the basketball players.
“The players showed warmth towards the children and were great role models with their attitude and enthusiasm.
“The children were especially pleased to also receive a Christmas gift from the players.
“This event brought our children in care and their families together – watching their little faces light up when receiving a gift from Essex Rebel basketball team and Santa was an absolute delight.
“Words can never describe how much this means to us for your time and support.”
